Is it illegal to work on your car at the roadside?

Someone told me it was illegal but I see the AA %26amp; RAC doing it all the time. Also does the law differ for working at the roadside in residential areas? Im sure the law does cover something like not being able to do an oil change outside your house and contaminating the road surface but would like to know how the wording of this law distinguishes between say a roadside battery change and a roadside oil change

ThanksIs it illegal to work on your car at the roadside?I think that emergency repairing is different from regular maintenance. Is it illegal to work on your car at the roadside?emergency repairs are usually but not always OK; it always depends on WHERE YOU ARE-some countries, states, cities, absolutely forbid it, others don't care unless you set up shop, some have fits if you spill a drop of oil, some don't have any idea what harm petroleum products cause-and so on, ad infinitum, ad nauseum..... you MUST check local statues. Some community standards allow no repairs, no washing, no anything, and NO nonrunning vehicles! If you are a safe distance off the highway, you can change a tyre, a light, or a fanbelt. (pretty much everywhere). I've pulled a piston on the side of the road...but I don't recommend it.
