How do you know if it's your battery or your car that's messed up?

Turned key, engine turned over for about 1/2 second and stopped. Turned key again--nothing. Even door locks %26amp; windows didn't work. Got a colleague out of office with jumper cables, just about to hook up, turned key again.....in business!

Am thinking battery has short, but I will feel really silly if I change out and car doesn't start again....somebody who knows about this stuff please tell me wassup! thanks...How do you know if it's your battery or your car that's messed up?The electronics class I just took leads me to also believe you have a bad/corroded/ or loose connection somewhere along your starting circuit. A shorted battery would certainly not cause this problem. Easiest thing to do here is clean the battery terminals and both cables,(where they make contact) then try starting it. If you still have the same old problem, chances are the starter has a bad connection. If you have access to a multimeter, this issue can solved in minutes. Good news is, if a bad connection is the problem, its usually free to fix, some cleaning/tightening usually does the trick. FYI: the second most likely cause an open circuit in your starter's armature. This is characterized by an occasional no cranking condition, which suddenly goes away after turning the key enough times. This condition requires buying a new starter unless you feel like rebuilding it. Lot's of information I know, but hopefully it makes enough sense to help u outHow do you know if it's your battery or your car that's messed up?go up to your local orilies or pep boys or auto zone and they can test it for you but it sounds like you have a bad battery to me but always test it first. How do you know if it's your battery or your car that's messed up?Sounds more like a connection problem. Check all battery cable connections...both at the battery and where they hook up to the engine and starter. Look for corrosion, dirt, oil, and loose bolts. How do you know if it's your battery or your car that's messed up?Make sure your battery cables are secure, sounds like there a bad or loose connection on you battery cables. if that's not it then the battery is shot.

Where in melbourne can I do a basic at home vehicle maintenance course?

Basically I want to do basic home vehicle maintenance course, learn how to check fluid levels, change a battery, jump start a car, change a tyre, change wind wipers, changes spark plugs and a basic fault finding guide if I break down somewhere.Where in melbourne can I do a basic at home vehicle maintenance course?Have you tried googling %26quot;Car maintenance courses Melbourne%26quot;. I found one short course offered at Swinbourne. If that one is not appropriate, then you could continue the search a bit further through the google list that comes up. Good luck. It's a good idea to have a knowledge of how to do those basic things.

The answer is simple, but the issue here is that there are a myriad of manufacturers that market alarms and remotes, and even within one manufacturer, there are many models.

You are going to need to either refer to the manual that came with the alarm package, or if you had it installed, and they neglected to provide the manual, you will need to contact the installer.

    Sorry for your circumstances.

2004 Honda Civic Limited Edition (Basic car) Err 1 on radio after battery changed?

    Hi,

2004 Honda Civic Special Edition (which seems to mean really basic with a/c, no power windows etc, it is a manual not automatic transmission).

Battery was changed on my car, and the radio won't play now. Not even the time display. The radio is basic AM/FM/CD (single). It has a little red light that blinks for theft protection (least there is words to that effect next to it). I have absolutely no mechanical knowledge, and electricity scares the beejeezus out of me, I can usually take things apart, but putting them together not so great - and anything with wires I stay clear of. I've read that to fix this the radio would have to be 'pulled' but would rather not. I bought the car used and don't have the manuals or anything.

I'd rather not take it into the dealership and pay for who knows what (dealership near me I don't trust very much - I've driven out of there with noises and when I called about it was told it 'rusted up' in the shop). I don't know of any rust that takes place in one hour flat (am I wrong there, or right to be suspicious of those folk)?

Thanks in advance, a terribly unknowledgeable person here.

OOOH ya - if anyone knows the code, how can I get the radio to accept it... I've punched a bunch of random numbers but can't get to the code prompt.

    I appreciate your help!

2004 Honda Civic Limited Edition (Basic car) Err 1 on radio after battery changed?Call Honda USA and they will help you. If you are not registered with them as the current owner they may want proof that you own the vehicle. They will need the VIN for the car and if the radio has been changed then they will need the serial number for the radio which means taking it out of the dash. If you know which dealer originally sold the car, it is possible that they have it on file as well.

    Getting Honda Radio code

Call Honda USA at 1-800-999-1009 and give them your VIN and serial number for the radio and your registration %26amp;/or title (may need to fax it) and they will give you the radio code for free.

http://www.odyclub.com/forums/showthread2004 Honda Civic Limited Edition (Basic car) Err 1 on radio after battery changed?I would first look in your owners manual. Typically (on the first page) there is a place where you can write down the radio-security pass code. If there is something written: then we've already gone through half the battle.

    If you find a number, I would suggest disconnecting the battery for about 10 mins and then reconnecting it. This should give you enough time for the radio to %26quot;reset%26quot; When you turn the car on, the radio should promp %26quot;Input security code%26quot;

Using the numbers found in the manual you can use the radio buttons (that are numbered) to input the code. If this doesnt work or you dont have the number you can try something simple like 1, 2, 3, 4. Otherwise you may have to go to the dealer for assistance.

There are a few other places you could find the pass-code:

Look through the glove compartment for any paperwork with serial numbers or written numbers. The most common places is a little white label with the serial number of the radio that starts with an %26quot;M%26quot; and a bunch of numbers after it and another 5 digit number. This 5 digit number is the super secret code. The places this is most commonly found is on the left side of the glove compartment, in the trunk somewhere along the gasket or underneath where the speakers are, under the fuse-box panel in the engine compartment, under the ashtray and sometimes under the center consoles lid.

    Best of luck.

One last thing, if it doesnt say %26quot;Code%26quot; on the screen when you turn your radio on... try hitting mode or scan this should cycle through some of the options available for the radio.

Also, when looking through the glove box, look up! Sometimes there is a sticker on top of the glovebox (basically on the inside of the dash, pointed downward).2004 Honda Civic Limited Edition (Basic car) Err 1 on radio after battery changed?i had a 2001 eclipse with the same issue, have you tried calling the seller? thats what i had to do and he gave me the code.

The code MUST be obtained from either a local dealership (some are funny and require you to bring the car or radio to them and show proof of ownership), or if you bought the car from a Honda dealership, simply call the service department with the radio Serial Number, printed on a barcode label on the radio. If the first dealership you call gives you trouble call another one around you.

  • My car won't start. I just changed the battery, too.?

I changed the battery on my car yesterday and it started fine. But this morning, the car won't start again. No sound at all. No power on dashboard, lock, window, radio... The new battery is supposed to set on 12V. But it now only has 3 to 4V. How could the voltage go down so much in overnight?

Does anyone have idea where the problem might be? Where should I check?

Is it something I can fix on my own?

Thank you very much for your help.My car won't start. I just changed the battery, too.?it's not the alternator. The engine wouldn't have been running if the voltage had been 3 to 4 volts. Something is draining the battery overnight. Accessories that someone didn't install right sometimes. If it's not obvious what's killing the battery, someone needs to hook up an amp meter to see the draw and start pulling fuses and disconnecting stuff to find out what the culprit is.

And a check with a voltmeter while the engine isn't running to verify the alternator is OK.My car won't start. I just changed the battery, too.?either it is the alternator or a wire connected to itMy car won't start. I just changed the battery, too.?sounds like the battery is completely dead or the connections are loose. Trace the wires from the batter back to the box. Also if you can make the battery clamp move its not tight enough. A loose ground can be a real pain in the but.

How to change the battery of an Audi A4 without resetting the computer?

How could you avoid the computer to be resetted and therefore loose the ability of starting the car after wards since the key has the memory chip in it that would not be acknowledged by the starting system. My neighbor claims I can't be done without causing disturbances to the mention systems but I wanted to see if somebody has done I find ludicrous to tow the car to service center just to get the battery changed. How to change the battery of an Audi A4 without resetting the computer? You did not mention about the model year of your A4. You can replace all A4 battery by yourself without using any special tool and electronic equipment and the car will work fine. There are two things you may need to do after battery replacement. First is the radio, you have to enter the 4 digits radio code to make it work again (note: most newer A4 model will not need this step). Second, you may need to initialize one touch power window (See your owner manual for the instruction).

Just follow the proper procedure for replacing car battery as for most of other car. How often should I change the battery fluid?

The battery in my car has gone dead. I talked to some coworkers and they asked if I had ever changed the battery fluid. I am kinda new to taking care of my own car. I don't know how often or even how to go about this. I can't find the drain plug they talked about and I don't see and battery fluid on the shelf at the store so I don't know ehre to get it. Any help would be appriciated. How often should I change the battery fluid?Hi. You don't change it!! On your scooter, you can, especially if it were sitting all winter, but your supposed to bring the battery inside for the winter so it doesn't prematurely fail. It is safer and easier to buy an at least 650Cold Cranking Amp battery for your car as this battery will stay strong all winter. Don't change your battery fluid because it is not worth possibly burning your skin if you spill any acid. Great question though. If your car battery fluid is low, you can top it off with water, but again it is really not worth it. Bring it to ant auto parts store for a free test. How often should I change the battery fluid?Time for a little payback. Tell them you called Die Hard, and they told you the fluid didn't need changed, but %26quot;boosted%26quot; Tell them you added some baking soda and now it's fine. In the mean time, buy a new battery. The baking soda neutralizes the acid in the battery and it won't work anymore. Buy a new battery! How often should I change the battery fluid? You generally DON'T replace your battery %26quot;fluid%26quot; (It's actually a fairly strong Sulfuric Acid, and will cause sever chemical burns upon contact with skin, clothes, etc..) When you battery is dead, you either jump it and see if it takes a charge from running...if it doesn't then you should have your alternator checked to see if it's charging the battery, if it is then you need to replace the battery itself (most modern batteries are sealed and require NO maintenance)

Just buy a new battery and be done with it. But when you do, tell them %26quot;thanks for their help and say it was tough going because the Finnegan pin under the Johnson bar was in the way and you needed to remove the Gunutz locker to find that pesky drain plug. After that it was a piece of cake.%26quot; Then walk away. How often should I change the battery fluid?Buy a new one is the only answer for your situation. Dead batteries are just that dead.

(usually a few seconds during changeover). I had the same problem with my blaupunkt this afternoon as I had to change my battery. The stereo will store all other information, but will need a code to activate.

As far as the Hyundai stereo goes it might not need a code, if it does and it is factory fitted, then you will have to call Hyundai and give them the VIN or whatever they need to locate the right code. Alternatively, there might be a way of jury rigging it with just some temporary wiring, attach just some thin wires to the terminals of the new battery and tie them to the terminal cables of the car so that when the old battery is removed, voltage is at least not interrupted until you can lock the terminal clamps down again and take the temp wires off. This will maintain a constant current and fool the stereo into thinking that it is the same battery and that it wasn't taken out or stolen or anything.

The reason that radios code like that is to prevent theft, they rely on constant current to maintain their memory and to keep the code active. If the current (power) is cut, the radio code is inactive and the radio thinks that it was removed from the car (possibly stolen). That is why.

What is the life expectancy of a car battery??

we got this car 2004 and its just been peace of crap from two years ago my husband thinks it's the battery I say other wise so how long does a car battery last normally are you suppose to change batteries every four years???What is the life expectancy of a car battery??There is no predetermined amount of battery life. So many variables come into play that it really depends on the situation at hand.

Your battery is probably bad though unless it is not being properly charged by the alternator or you have bad battery cables.

A starter can kill a battery quickly if it is drawing to many amps.

Typically a battery will last up to 5 years if maintained properly and yes I have seen them last for as long as 12 years but this is a rare item to last that long especially on todays cars and the poor maintenance habits of todays drivers.

Best bet is to remove the battery and have it fully charged then load tested this will tell you what the battery is doing and if it is bad or good. Thanks Bill BWhat is the life expectancy of a car battery??Depending on where you live batteries will usually last 2-8 years. It will be on the low side if you live somewhere that get really hot or cold and on the high side if you live in an average weather area. Why do you say that the car is a piece of crap. The only thing the battery would do is give you problems starting the car. If you give some more info you may get some better advice.

    Starting a car takes more electricity than all of your accessories put together so it may be the battery. Even if you headlights and everything else works the battery may still be bad. Try turning on your headlights and then starting your car. If the lights go almost all the way out while you are holding the key in the start position then it is probably your battery. I'm not sure what kind of options there are in Germany, but stores such as sears or autozone will usually check your battery for free so you may want to call around. I agree with you, next time get a Honda, still my favorite car company even though I don't drive one any more.What is the life expectancy of a car battery??lots of places that sell batteries have a %26quot;load test%26quot;

machine, it puts a load on the battery and they

also check battery connections and make shure

they are clean and tight.. the battery may not

Replacement batteries usually last 3-6 years. What is the life expectancy of a car battery??your problem sounds like you need a new battery, I would go get a free charging system check to be sure from somebody where you live, usually batteries last as long as they are warranted for, if it's a 2 yr. battery you can almost bet that it will die on that day or shortly after the 2 yrs. What is the life expectancy of a car battery??3-5 years. Maybe more, maybe less... depends on what type of life they had. Excessive cold temperatures, if they were drained down or allowed to sit without a charge would shorten the life. What is the life expectancy of a car battery??I do purchasing for the city of Chicago's fleet maintenance department. I purchase Interstate batteries (they make the die hards for Sears) and we buy the top of the line, they take quite a beating and they usually have a life expectancy of around three to four years, and that is the best!

my 2003 nissan sentra's battery recently started failing and i'm looking for a place with a good price. i live in riverside, CA, and I know how to change the battery myself, but I just don't know many places that sells car batteries around here. Kragens has some for $80 and $90, but that price seems a bit on the high side, is there any place to find a cheap battery without resorting to really bad brands?Where can I buy a car battery?Just about any good auto parts store will sell you a battery. Outlets like Pep Boys and Kragen have pretty good stuff for decent prices. Sears has a pretty good line of automotive batteries too. Probably the best warranty is offered by Interstate, as you can get an Interstate battery exchanged at any auto parts store that handles them.Where can I buy a car battery?Trust me spend tat little bit more when it comes to things like this cus in my own experience cheaper does not last as longer and the fact that you wont have to change the battery again for atleast 2-3 years will make it all the more justifiable!!! How do you change battery terminals on a Ford Mustang?

My friend's car is a 2000-ish Mustang she has to mess with the battery every time to get her car to start.

Her dad told her the battery terminals need to be changed, but he lives 2 hours away and she has work in the morning.

Is it something I could get my brother to do? Is it difficult?

Can someone give me a step-by-step walk-through on how to do this?

Thank you.How do you change battery terminals on a Ford Mustang? It should be fairly simple depending on how mechanically inclined your brother is. Here is the info:

DIY: How to Change Your Battery

    From About.com

    What you will need:

    1. An adjustable wrench or a socket wrench

    2. New battery

    3. Wire brush or battery terminal cleaner

    4. Clean water

    5. Safety glasses

    6. Rubber gloves (Optional)

    7. Can of Rust-O-Lieum primer

    8. White Lithium Grease

WORK IN A WELL-VENTILATED AREA AWAY FROM SPARKS OR OPEN FLAMES. DO NOT SMOKE. AND ITS ALWAYS A GOOD IDEA TO WEAR PROTECTIVE EYEWEAR.

    *

Disconnect the negative cable first and then disconnect the positive cable.

    *

Remove the battery hold down. It may be along the top of the battery or on the battery tray clamped to the side of the battery.

    *

Once it is free, carefully lift it up and out of the tray.

BATTERY'S CONTAIN SULFURIC ACID AND IT CAN BURN YOUR SKIN. IT IS VERY CORROSIVE TO ANYTHING IT COMES IN CONTACT WITH.

    * Look at the battery tray. If there are signs of rust and corrosion, clean it off with plenty of clear water. Allow the tray to dry and spray it with the primer to prevent further deterioration.

    * Place the new battery in the tray and reinstall the hold down clamp.

    * If you have a top terminal battery, clean the inside of the cables with a battery brush and wire brush the battery posts. If you have a side terminal battery, clean the terminals with the wire brush.

    * Check and make sure there is no corrosion on the battery cables. Clean them as required.

    * Reattach the positive battery cable first and then the negative battery cable. Tighten the tight but on side terminal batteries do not over tighten. You can pull the side post out of the battery if you over tighten them.

    * Give the terminals a good coating of White Lithium Grease to keep them from getting corroded.

    * Start the engine and you're done.

This is a quick and easy job that should take 30 to 45 minutes. How do you change battery terminals on a Ford Mustang? It actually very simple, The terminal only cost around 10 bucks for a pair. You simply disconnect the battery and changed the terminals by removing the nutt that connects the cable to the terminals and adding the new ones. If you cant do it then any mechanic or person with minimal mechanical knowledge can do this. Good luckHow do you change battery terminals on a Ford Mustang?it's a little hard to say without seeing them, but often times the problem is corrosion which you can do something about. carefully remove the negetive cable from the battery, get a can of coke or make a mixture of baking soda and water, (not a paste, just very milky looking). dip the end of the cable in the mixture or the coke and leave it set for 20 minutes-half an hour, dry the end, hook it back up and do the same with the other cable. be careful not to get the mixture on the top of the battery, what you are doing is cleaning the chemical build up by neutralizing the acids, if you get it in the battery it will also neutralize it and you will be buying a new battery. this will only help if the problem is corrosion, you may have bad cables or a bad connection on the other end, and replacing the cable is probably more than you want to do.

How to get rid of car battery symbol in dash?

So I installed a brand new battery for my corolla '95. I did everything right and even cleaned the terminals so I am pretty sure that I did everything right when I installed it. My car started fine and everything but the thing is the symbol to change a new battery still shows up on my dash, so I don't understand whats wrong?

Could it be the wiring? Or does the dash need to be somehow reseted so it knows that I did put a new battery? How to get rid of car battery symbol in dash? The battery symbol is indicating that the alternator is not operating. This may be due to a voltage regulator or alternator failure. The system needs to be tested in the car to correctly diagnose the failure. How to get rid of car battery symbol in dash?Wow - I can certainly see how'd you'd make that mistake.

The battery symbol has nothing to do with the condition of the battery. They've used that lamp on some cars for 50 years, but it has always meant the same thing. That symbol is intended to tell you that the charging system (the alternator) has stopped working. A new battery could never never never never never never solve that problem. Amazing, isn't it?

I suppose if the oil light comes on, you'd change the oil, right? If the brake light comes on, you'd get new brakes. It makes sense, but it won't work. That's just not what that means, pure and simple.

P.S. - the idea you could %26quot;reset%26quot; that lamp is very funny. It's completely a dumb circuit that has no intelligence. It would be like resetting your porch light. How to get rid of car battery symbol in dash? That symbol does not mean %26quot; Change battery%26quot;. It means there is a discharge condition...as in alternator is not recharging the battery. Have your charging system checked. How to get rid of car battery symbol in dash?It may or may not be the battery.

We have a '95 vehicle as well, when you replace batteries and such a lot of the time you have to take it in to the shop to get it reset.

How to change ML 320 battery?

how do you change a Mercedes ML320 car battery?

Can i do it my self or should i go to the experts? How to change ML 320 battery? It's pretty easy. The only thing you really need is a socket extension to be able to reach down to the bottom of the battery tray and loosen the clamps. If you're not using a Benz battery, just make sure your replacement battery has the little lip on the bottom for the clamps in order to secure the battery in place. Having a loose battery sliding around in the battery tray is not very safe.

As the others have mentioned, have your battery code ready as the radio will go into theft-mode when the power has been disconnected. How to change ML 320 battery?Of course you can do it yourself. Disconnect the old battery and install a new one. Make sure you have the right battery AND you have a code to your radio (after battery power is disconnected and then connected again you need to enter code into the radio.)How to change ML 320 battery?remove the positive then the negative terminals. then remove the battery hold down clamp. then install new battery, clamp then the negative cable and finally the positive cable.

you must also have the radio code.

How do you know when to change your Car?

I drive a 1989 Corolla and I was wondering what are the signs or symptoms to know that it is time to change to a diffrent vhiecle. I am not the kind of person who likes to get rid of something that works. I have had this car for a while now and there is nothing wrong with it. Just recently brought a new battery and everything works fine. But I have seen friends that change there car in 5-6 years. They say %26quot;something was worng with it%26quot; and never tell me what it is or I do not understand it.The car is 17 years old. It has only been in one major accident and the rest were minor. (People damaging the back bumper.)

Vhiecle Status: The paint on the car is fine no dents: There is rust that occurs near the wheel.

The A/C, Radio all still work. All the lights in the car still works. I have felt no diffrence in power over the years I have tried it.

The engine is fine a bit dusty and some rusted parts but nothing serious. No holes. The rims are rusted metal coating has fallen off.How do you know when to change your Car?Since it sounds like the car is in expected shape for being 17 years old and you are happy with it and do not feel a need for a new car then drive it till it breaks beyond the cost of repairing it. What I mean that as long as the repairs are normal expenses and you can afford it then keep it going. If the engine dies or the tranny throws a gear and you are looking at major expenses then it would be time to sell car for parts and spend your money towards a new or newer car. You can always have a mechanic check the commpression of the engine and other major parts of the car for any tell tale signs of major issues to come.

If you car in not burning oil, has good compression, the tranny shifts well, the steering is stright and tight and the brakes are solid then you are good to go. The rest of the car may nickel and dime you but it may be less then a new car.How do you know when to change your Car?when you have the money to do so

when repair and maint costs exceed the value of the car / your expendable budgetHow do you know when to change your Car?Your car probably has little value if sold or traded in due to the fact it is 17 years old. Since you report no big problems I would be willing to stick with the car until problems develop. Those who trade every few years do it for a variety of reasons usually unrelated to performance and reliability. How do you know when to change your Car?when your car starts to burn oil, or if the car is running hotter than normal - not necessarily overheating, but the temperature gauge points higher than you remember. How do you know when to change your Car?Not to be mean, but by chance are you a compulsive collector, or the type who can't throw out anything that isn't broken? In my family, my mom would get a different car every 2-3 years. She would get a new car because she wanted to change looks. Just like furniture or clothes or hairstyles. We were considered low income for years and then made it into middle class, so the cars got a little nicer, but that's it. We didn't drive a car for 20 years until a catastrophic failure and then start all over again. That just seems ridiculous to me. Now that I'm a young adult and am just getting on my feet, I don't have much money for a vehicle so I've basically gone from beater to beater in the last 5 years. Some cars were nicer than others. I always keep up on maintenance, but usually I am given a vehicle on it's last leg and it ends up dying on me. I have been the last owner of 8 out of the 10 cars I've had in the last 5 years. Personally, I just don't see the point in keeping a vehicle for that long unless you don't have money to buy another one or unless it's a sports car or rare car.How do you know when to change your Car?when repairs cost more than the value of the car is the major one. most people trade in more for the fact of not wanting something old. or they get tired of it after a few years.

How much does it Cost to change a battery and a the belt in the engine of a car?

Labor and PartsHow much does it Cost to change a battery and a the belt in the engine of a car?It depends on the car of course but belts will cost about $10 for a %26quot;V%26quot; - belt and around $25 for a serpentine belt.

    Batteries cost about $30-$80 depending on the brand and %26quot;CCA%26quot;

Labor also depends on the car and how accessible everything is, but labor at most auto shops is $60/hour and should take between 1/2 hour and 1 hour. How much does it Cost to change a battery and a the belt in the engine of a car?batteries can be anywhere from 30-80 bucks and a belt is usually liek 20-30 bucks. labor shouldnt be more that 50 or 60 bucks. How much does it Cost to change a battery and a the belt in the engine of a car?Depends on the battery.

    Maybe...$100-$150? Cheaper or more expensive.

If you have ANY mechanical ability, it's almost dummy proof on many newer cars to do it yourself. The Serpentine Belt on many cars is about a 1 minute job.

There is a tensioner that you move with whatever tool it takes.

You slide the old belt off and let the tensioner back to its normal spot (it's spring loaded)

You put the new belt on in the same routing that the old one was in, minus one pulley.

You pull/push (whichever way it goes) on the tensioner to let the belt go back over that pulley.

    You're done.

The battery MAY require you to hook up some other power source if you have a special radio or some alarm systems. That's not true with most vehicles. You can usually unbolt the battery cables and take off whatever is holding the battery down and reverse the procedure for putting a new one in.

This is true with most cars. But if you want to pay someone else to do it, they may charge up to a half hour labor for both jobs depending on what the book calls for. Including time to look up the right belt and battery, it may take the technician a whopping 10 minutes to change both. Then you're looking at markup prices on the battery and belt.

Worth seeing whether or not you can do it yourself on the car.How much does it Cost to change a battery and a the belt in the engine of a car?well, I dont agree 100% with the others. Serpenteen belts can go $40-50, and batteries...$40-$100 Labor may vary depending on the layout of the car. some belts take 10 min and others up to an hour....Batteries usually dont take long but you never know what you run into. I say my range for a mechanic anywhere from $80-$170 for parts(remember they mark them up from what YOU can buy them for) and $100-$170 for labor.

Car not starting. Is it time for a new battery?

My car battery has been ok.It came with my new camry 2004 model.I think I must have left the little lights on (below the headlights ) %26amp; after 3 hrs the car wouldn't start.I then did a jump start with my friends's car %26amp; drove for about 5 miles. After I turned of the engine it refused to start.I also can't shift gears to neutral in order to move the car.Is it time to change the car's battery?

Planing to call AAA to jump start first thing in the morning. But I'm running out of gas too.I would need to take the car to toyota to work on it but need to fill up gas on the way.Is it okay to fill up gas without turning off the engine?

AAA replaces battery's too but I'm not sure if there should be any other problem. How much can I pay for a new battery?

Lotsa questions but I would sure appreciate some answers. The main one being,do I need to go for a new battery?Car not starting. Is it time for a new battery?Well I'd desiring to have the battery tested and trying to charge it fully before deciding on any new battery purchase.Second is really it isn't good for you to pump gas while engine is running but I've known a few ppl that have done so including myself. Most important thing is to keep a solid ground position when pumping the fuel regardless if the car is off you idling a hand should be touching metal on the vehicle and the other pumping the fuel into the tank.Whats more dangerous really is having you car give off a static charge or your cell phone ringing even cam cause issues thats another reason to ground your body before pumping the fuel.

One thing you could do is see once the vehicle is boosted and driven a bit if the lights or dash or it's electrical system seem to be acting up that might suggest that the voltage regulator or alternator isn't working properly but if you can start it up and all the lights etc seem normal pretty once its running then more then likely the alternator or voltage regulator is fine it's just a weak battery or weak connection in the charging system etc.

I'd be checking the alternator belt on it and any belts to see if any are loose , plus check the battery terminals to see if their tight and clean too.

I prefer to carry a portable booster that way you can simply give you car a boost if needed yourself sometimes they run as low as 20 to 30 bucks and are well worth the invest if a good quality product.Another thing you could do is request gas be brought to you by AAA when they come to boost the vehicle. Some consider both a service the bringing of gas then the boost but I don't know exactly how AAA runs it service contracts.

If under warranty or is affecting the warranty that you must use Toyota I'd use their services otherwise just drive to any reliable mechanic or shop that sells automotive batteries and ask for a free charging system check and estimate.

Due to the age of that vehicle it could be rust or corrision in the charging systems connections or simply a weak or dead cell battery.I say the battery is probably the first thing I'd look at or a belt or charging system is the cause here and more then likely bec you can drive it once boosted the alternator must be giving out power but is it enough or is the battery not able to hold a charge for long at all bec of dead cells.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way you can ask AAA to check for loose connections etc on the battery or a loose belt but really these are all things they should just naturally look at before boosting anyways.

What I recommend is Interstate battery's and I bet that vehicle of yours would run well with at least a 750 to 850 or more cold amp rated battery. If you can bet a double post battery do it their great if you need a boost or to give boosts or if you ever wish to install it in your next vehicle etc.Heres a link to the company by the way Interstate is what some of the top racing cars in the world use.Just look up your area to find a local sales agent and most outlets will also test your charging system for you too.

http://www.interstatebatteries.com/cs_esCar not starting. Is it time for a new battery?yea you need a new battery just go to auto zone they can help you. most battery's only last 4to 5 years so you are due.Car not starting. Is it time for a new battery? You may have killed a cell in the battery. Check the voltage with a meter. It should be over 12 volts. These stupid small cars with their small batteries, if you don't drive them for a week or so it can kill the battery. I bought the sears platinum and it hasn't killed it.

Also clean the posts and terminals. get some grease for the posts. New battery won't hurt.Car not starting. Is it time for a new battery? It could be a couple of things. If your car will start with a jump it not the starter, but it could be the battery or the alternator. The best bet is to take it to a shop and get a load test done. It this is not an option start the car turn on the lights, radio, fan, ect and if the car dies you need an alternator and probably a battery. It the car continues to run and the lights don't dim you just need a new battery.Car not starting. Is it time for a new battery?AAA over charges for batteries. You can get one cheaper at Autozone

How to check which cell has a problem in a car battery?

I changed my car battery last year. But in this winter, the battery keeps being drained. I had the people from whom I bought the battery from checked it. they said somewhere is draining the battery.

Now I had the battery checked by a service dealer. They said one of the cells in the battery is bad.

How can I tell who is telling the truth? Is there a way I myself can check the battery? How to tell a cell in the battery is good or not?

BTW, I think I am pretty technical oriented and like to buy some small tools to do it.

Your input to the question is highly appreciated. How to check which cell has a problem in a car battery? You can buy a battery tester and check yourself, if the battery is not sealed when it is fully charged remove the covers or screw plugs and tap along side of battery with handle of screw driver not the sharp end, you will notice bubbles rising in the cells if they are ok, if there are no bubbles that cell is dead and you will have to replace batteryHow to check which cell has a problem in a car battery?Really you can't. The battery case is sealed. So just get another battery. You can't revive 1 cell, just replace itHow to check which cell has a problem in a car battery?Single cells don't usually break down in a car battery; if they do, you can usually tell by the lower level of water in it. Maybe you'd like to check the level(s) first, if necessary, refill with de-ionized water, then check the density of the water/acid mixture with an areometer, these are rather inexpensive. Try to recharge the battery overnight, making sure not to overcharge it, then check again. Next, however, make sure your generator works properly; very often, a faulty generator causes such problems.

GOOD LUCK!How to check which cell has a problem in a car battery?A battery usually doesn't go bad in just one year. If it is low repeatedly, it usually means the alternator is failing to keep it charged. But that should be signalled by your %26quot;Battery%26quot; or %26quot;Alternator%26quot; warning light staying on all the time on the dash. Or it's trying to charge but there is corrosion on the battery connections blocking the flow of current. You can disconnect the battery and look at the connections and see if there is clean shiny metal to make contact, or if they are covered with discolored corrosion. There is a special double wire brush ($3.50 at Walmart or the parts store) that does sa good job. The battery installer probably took care of that when they did the battery.

If the dealer said one of the cells is bad, they could have shown you how they arrived at that conclusion, maybe by testing the cells individually with a battery tester (hygrometer-not expensive), which you can do yourself if the cell caps on top of the battery can be removed. Be careful! You're dealing with sulfuric acid! Check the fluids per the directions and rinse the tester off and out, and don't drip it on the carpet or your clothes or hands or shoes! Having a cheap container of water at hand to rinse it in would be a good idea.

You can test the alternator by using a VOM (Radio Shack or Sears or Harbor Freight, under $10) on the battery terminals, set to the smallest Voltage scale. It should read 12.5V, or 13.2V, or something like that. Then start the car (which drains the battery a little) and measure again quickly, while the alternator is pumping current back into the battery using a higher voltage. It should read a volt or two higher than before, for a few minutes, anyway. If it doesn't, the alternator may need changing. A large auto parts store will test it for free, Advance Auto, for one, will test it while it's still on the car. Of course, I had a Toyota Corolla once that wouldn't charge, and it turned out that a lone wire running down beside the engine, with an in-line fuse holder that was completely corroded, was at fault.

    Wish you the best!

MikeHow to check which cell has a problem in a car battery?Assuming your battery isn't sealed, (I know mine aren't) you can check for a dead cell by a specific gravity test. They sell the testers (hydrometer) real cheap. They suck up the fluid from each individual cell so you can compare them. If you have one that's more than .050 lower than the next lowest one, that cell's dead.

Checking for a drain, if you have an ammeter, connect it between the negative battery terminal and post with everything off. It shouldn't read more than about 250 mA. If it doesn't have auto-range, be careful not to open the door, or accidentally honk the horn.

If all you have is a 12 volt test light, you can make sure it goes off after you unplug fuses for everything that should have a drain, like ECM, radio, BCM if equipped, etc.. If it doesn't go off after that, keep unplugging stuff until it does, to isolate which circuit.

  • How to replace spark plugs and wires myself?

hi. i decided to replace spark plugs and wires my own, because i think it is a good opportunity for me to learn more about cars. i have no idea about cars yet, i cant even change car battery my own, but this time, i want to take times and try it. first what tools i need for replaceing those spark plugs and wires? and is it too hard for beginner to do it??How to replace spark plugs and wires myself?knowing the car would help, but your going to need a spark plug socket which there are different sizes but they are cheap, you will need a ratchet, an Extension for the ratchet wouldn't hurt to have a few different lengths laying there, and its alot easier with a u joint for your socket, then you will need plugs and wires, its not hard to do, i will tell you to take one spark plug wire off put then the spark plug gap the plug to what ever it says, under the hood on the label it will say gap xx-xx amount, spark plug gappers are 3 or 4 bucks and last a life time, you can gap them all at once to start out too, then you put the new plug in, find the closest length wire and put it in, and repeat on the next one, chances are the wires will not be the same length exactly due to patents and other things, so just the closest one, and the reason i say take them off one at a time is because you will not need to know the firing order that way, and you will not mess up the wires and firing order and get your self in a bind, also, you may break a spark plug so you may end up buying an extruder they are 10-15 bucks for a cheap one, and if you want to do it a good way and make it easier for next time buy a small container of anti- seze and put it on the threads of the spark plug before screwing it in, your wires should come with a small thing of die elecric grease and use it spairingly or buy a small tube of it for 5 bucks, and you can find torque specs. on how tight to make the spark plugs but then you need a torque wrench so just make them snug- tight but not tight tightHow to replace spark plugs and wires myself? You don't usually need any tools, unless the wires are under a cover that bolts down or something. How to replace spark plugs and wires myself?Depends on what kind of car you have and the type of engine and what kind of spark plug wires it has. Some cars, the wires just pop off. Mine, a Chevy, the wires have to be unbolted. That's only after you take the damn air cleaner off first! Good luck. How to replace spark plugs and wires myself? You'll definitely need a spark plug socket, the correct size for you plugs. Probably 5/8 deep well, either a handle or rachet to turn the socket. And a good eye for detail.

You need to twist the spark plug wire at the boot on the plug and pull.

Good luck, for the first time I recommend having someone who knows how there, just for pointers. How to replace spark plugs and wires myself?easiest tools are a ratchet, plug socket of the correct size an extension to fit the ratchet, a universal joint for the socket, and a spark plug gapping guage. Do only one plug %26amp; wire at a time.. Match the old wire for length as close as u can to one of the new set. make sure the new wire is properly seated on the new plug and the coil pack/distributor. Do one at a time till theye are all done. I f'got to mention check the gap on the plug with the guage before installing the plugsHow to replace spark plugs and wires myself?tools:

    spark plug socket

masking tape or post its with tape

    remove coil packs and/or wires

label wire with tape- for that cylinder. set up 1-4 from left to right, like u read.

    remove plugs

make sure new ones are gapped. install until hand tight then turn 90 degrees.

now replace wires by length size as u have them labeled.

also check out youtube for video walk thrus. a few are availableHow to replace spark plugs and wires myself?First, locate your plugs, and see how easy they are to get to. Some cars are real easy, but others can be very hard, requiring removing parts and or removing fender covers, tilting the engine or whatever.

If you can get to one plug, try putting a spark plug socket wrench on it ( a tool you will need). There are different sizes, so it could be 5/8, 3/4 or metric of those sizes. (I don't know metric. probably a 17 or 18 or maybe 19).

Once yu find out what socket will fit, use that on all spark plugs. These sockets are deep, like three to four inches long. Then you will need a socket drive rachet. A 3/8 inch drive rachet wrench works good. It goes on the socket you will use, so make sure your socket is also made for 3/8 drive. It has a square hole on top that is 3/8 inch.

You might need some extensions also, maybe different lengths, like 2 inch, 4 inch, 6 inch and10 inch. these can be put together to form a longer one, if needed, lik the 10 inch plus the 4 inch will make a 14 inch extension. Some of the places to get to spark plugs, can be hard to get to and you need long extensions.

Before you start, take some masking tape, and put one piece on each plug wire, and put a number on it with a felt tip pen, so that you know which plug each wire goes to. Number the same as each cylinder. I don't do this, I know where they go, but at times, even I get confused.

Pull the plugs first, leave the wires alone for now, but pull the boots off the plugs as you go along. Turn each plug, to the left, to loosen it, and then keep turning until all the way out.

Take the new plug and set the gap, with a gapper, to the specificed gap, and put on the washer, and put it in the hole, tighten up carefully, do not cross thread them. If it acts like it is binding while going in, come back out, your are cross threading. Aluminum engines cross thread easily and being soft metal, can ruin the threads inside the hole. Tighten the plug snugly but do not over tighten, you can break the plug.

Gap each plug before you put it in. Do not use oil on the threads. Once you get all the plugs back into their prospective holes, then you can start on the wires. Remove only one at a time, and replace it with a new one. Then do another one, and replace it. Until you got them all.

If you jump the gun and take them all off, you could be trying to remember where they went. When you are done, check your firing sequence, starting with number one on the distributor cap and going around in the direction of fire.

It would be a good idea to find the fire sequence before you start and write it down, along with which way the distributor turns, and mark number 1 on the distributor so you know where to start when you check the firing order.

For instance, on a 6 cyclinder (some, not all) 1 5 3 6 2 4 is the firing order. You would start with number 1, go around clockwise, next would be 5, then 3 and so on. And of course, number one would go to number one plug, near the front of the engine, 5 would be next to last near the back.

this was a quick lesson, and depending on your car, it could be easy or very hard. So take your time, figure out what needs to be done, and do it. There are manuals in libraries, usually, that will help. You need to know the gap for the plugs, to set them.

    Good luck and have fun.

Im trying to change the battery for my car. would a bosch battery be good? and how much would it be?

batteries are batteries, if you buy one that is warranted for 4 yrs. it's going to last 4 yrs., no sense in paying more for a name like bosch or delco when they all do the job and last the same, just be sure to get enough cranking amps for your motor and you will be fine.Im trying to change the battery for my car. would a bosch battery be good? and how much would it be?Do some comparison shopping.

Make sure the battery you choose are the correct volt, amp, and size for your vehicle.

I changed my car battery on my KIA Spectra 2002, and I can't get the radio to stop flashing "code".

Does anyone know how to reset the code?

ThanksI changed my car battery on my KIA Spectra 2002, and I can't get the radio to stop flashing %26quot;code%26quot;.What you need to do is

-Remove the radio from the dash, find the model # and serial # from it (write them down, put in glovebox in case it happens again). Reinstall radio.

-Call your nearest Kia dealership, ask for the parts department and ask them for the radio code. They will ask you for the model # and/or serial #. If you are nice enough to them (flirt a little!) they will give it to you free of charge, usually they charge for them. Also, ask them to tell you exactly how to enter it correctly.

-Write it down on the same piece of paper in your glove box.
