My remote car starter is not working as well as it did. I changed the batteries but the signal is still weak?

The starter was put in in 1998 when I bought my new Durango. It has been working great up until this summer. No matter how new the batteries are in the remote it seems like the signal is getting weaker and weaker. I practically have to be within 50 feet of the vehicle before it will start. That kinds of defeats the purpose. Any ideas. Do remotes wear out? get corroded? Thanks for your ideas. My remote car starter is not working as well as it did. I changed the batteries but the signal is still weak?Assuming that the battery contacts are clean, then the receiver or transmitter may have drifted frequency a little. That would reduce the range of the signal. This may have happened due to aging of the components or maybe being dropped a few times. Dirt may also be a contributing factor. The dirt will change the voltage levels on some of the circuits and again either change the frequency or reduce the RF field.

Good luck with it. It may be time to get another transmitter. My remote car starter is not working as well as it did. I changed the batteries but the signal is still weak?As a temporary measure, hold the remote up to the bottom of your chin for more range...it converts your body into an antenna. Electrical devices do degrade over time...10 years of use may have weakened it. Could be that the remote is going bad and losing signal strength...maybe get a new remote. My remote car starter is not working as well as it did. I changed the batteries but the signal is still weak? This is great that you ask this

Do you have a cell phone repair shop or something where you live at?

Almost ALWAYS it needs to be cleaned. The batteries last for a long time, take it somewhere and have it cleaned.

My mom's remote starter went out and it cost us $279 to get a new one from the dealer

We took the old one to Idaho Cellular and Repair, they cleaned it with an airbrush and it worked perfect

We had gone camping a few weeks ago and gotten dust inside

I've just had some work done to my car and the battery was changed. The airbag wasn't touched in any way, but the dashboard airbag light stays on all the time now. My 2005 Toyota Corolla car remote won't work...can someone tell me how to fix it myself?

I already changed the battery, so it's not that. Please help. I HATE the dealership and I am not paying 150 dollars or whatever for this.My 2005 Toyota Corolla car remote won't work...can someone tell me how to fix it myself?Since the battery went dead, it may need to be reprogrammed. My 2005 Toyota Corolla car remote won't work...can someone tell me how to fix it myself?yes, if you're cheap, use the key.

the autozone in my hometown has a tester that tests the output of the transmitter. make sure the transmitter is working correctly. if it has a new battery but is still not transmitting, you have a faulty remote and it needs to be replaced. if autozone's tester shows that your remote works correctly, you have an issue with the receiver on the car. that's gonna need more diagnostic testing and you're gonna have to pay a dealer....sorry.My 2005 Toyota Corolla car remote won't work...can someone tell me how to fix it myself?re change the battreys, when you do use new one ONLY

if still not working, i think you are to cheap to pay 150 $, so don't buy a new one, just use the key like other normal people, i mean its only a Corolla :S

Audi TT not holding charge - battery is fine. How complicated it is to chk &/or change the alternator? DIY?

I just bought the car yesterday - 2001 225hp. Last night it stalled taking off from stop sign, then lost power and died. Battery has been checked by Auto Zone. They charged it. Car cranked up after installed. 1 hour later it won't start again. From some of these posts, sound like we should start with the alternator. Can we do it ourselves?Audi TT not holding charge - battery is fine. How complicated it is to chk %26amp;/or change the alternator? DIY?sure if you got tools only take off the battery cables first and then what ever you can to get to it some are easy some not so much but most anyone can do if they think about it...... and really they should have check it when they was checking the battery they use the same thing to check with.. jump it and have it check again

Replacing alternator(ovrcharging, rotten egg smell?) in 2 days, will short drive to shop affect new battery?

    1st:

My car was flashing the ABS lights and BRAKE light whenever I stepped on the brakes, or gas or turned on wipers, or turn signal. They would just flash quickly and go away, and then when I got up to a certain speed, they would go away completely.I would slow down, and they would go again. I drove it for about 120 miles this weekend, and the lights did this most of the way. When I got home, there was a horrible smell coming from the battery area that lingered a long time in my garage.

I took the car to AutoZone and changed the battery. I told them about my problem and they hooked up a machine to the car. The machine came back as %26quot;PASSED%26quot;. They said that a different kind of test had to be done to determine the cause of my problem. I took it to a shop and they ran a diagnostic test with another machine, and said it was the alternator, which will be replaced in a couple days. They said this could be the cause of the rotten eggs smell I was getting from the car, which might have been the battery insides burning, and can also be what was causing all the flashing lights to go crazy because of all the overcharging.Does that sound about right??

    How accurate are those machines?

    2nd:

I heard that a bad alternator can ruin a good battery in no time, so even if I replaced the battery 2 days ago, and drove the car about another 5 miles before I finally got home, and didn't and won't drive it again until I take it the shop about 2 miles away from my house, can that be the case, and then I will have to replace the battery, or would I have to go miles and miles before that happens?

THANKS!!Replacing alternator(ovrcharging, rotten egg smell?) in 2 days, will short drive to shop affect new battery? The voltage regulator inside the alternator failed. I would limit driving the car. You probably won't damage the battery. What happens is overcharging evaporates the water out of the battery. A dry battery isn't good. The longer you drive, the more likely the water will evaporate out of the battery. The rotten egg smell is the sulfuric acid fumes and hydrogen gas from your battery. The only thing that kept your battery from blowing up is luck.

Apparently the AZ guy didn't know how to test the charging system.

When a battery charges, it creates hydrogen gas. Very explosive. Normal charging does not create an appreciable amount. But overcharging can.Replacing alternator(ovrcharging, rotten egg smell?) in 2 days, will short drive to shop affect new battery? All that sounds true and reasonable.

No you didn't hurt the car yet, but really an overcharging battery will do a battery in very quickly.

You can even go the two miles to the shop.Replacing alternator(ovrcharging, rotten egg smell?) in 2 days, will short drive to shop affect new battery?overcharging can give out fumes and ruin a battery and electrical systems, these fancy machines are a sales ploy you need just a basic $10 multimeter set to the 20 volt dc range and get a person to run the engine at around 3000 rpm meter should indicate approx 14 volt if it indicates anything over 16 volts your regulator is possibly at fault and only drive it a short distance to a independent auto electrician to get it fixed as i don't reckon these big outfits

How do I use this basic battery charger to charge my car battery?

I lost the manual. It is a %26quot;6/2amp Solid State Battery Charger.%26quot; It has a switch to change from 2 amp to 6 amp. The meter reads from 0 to 8 D.C. amperes.

I'm charging the battery in my old Crown Vic, so I guess it's 12 volt. I know how to hook it up and turn it on safely.

I just don't know how to tell when it's done charging. I know that it's important not to overcharge the battery. So how do I tell from reading the meter (0-8 D.C. amperes) when it is sufficiently charged?

Thank you.How do I use this basic battery charger to charge my car battery? Most newer battery chargers have an auto %26quot;check%26quot; - %26quot;charge%26quot; - %26quot;complete%26quot; stage built in. If you need it done sooner, put it on the 6 amp charge for about 4 hours. How do I use this basic battery charger to charge my car battery?Without an volt meter to check the battery's state of charge it's always best to charge at the slowest and lowest 2 amp setting.

Life spam of a car battery and alternator...Please tell me how long is expected...?

I had a flood in my street and that did damage the battery of my car, as well as the alternator. My car is about 4 years of use and the mechanic told me that I was in the right time to change all these, coz sooner or later I will have it damaged by usage as times passes. But the change was due to the flood and now I feel that I should have been more careful about my car and not to park it in the near street while a tropical storm passed and flooded it all and I did pay a big note!Life spam of a car battery and alternator...Please tell me how long is expected...?It's %26quot;life SPAN%26quot;, spam is a type of canned meat. Anyway the battery was probably ready to be changed because four to six years is about the life span of a decent battery. The alternator on the other-hand should probably only be replaced once or maybe twice during the whole life of the car. I'm sure the water had something to do with the alternator failure. This may however not be all the electrical problems your going to experience from this flood damage, especially if the car was started before it was completely dried out. There could be damage to circuit boards, relays, switches, and interior and exterior lighting. I would try to keep it out of the tropical storms especially if you have a lot invested in it. GOOD LUCK!!!Life spam of a car battery and alternator...Please tell me how long is expected...?its 50-50 if you have been driving for 5 years on that Battery, you are lucky car battery's life is between 3-5 years, so that needed to be changed, alternator, that is water damage, but look at it this way there was nothing you could do about it, and you are lucky it just came to that.Life spam of a car battery and alternator...Please tell me how long is expected...?about three to four years on a battery. The alternator should last about ten years, but it was water damaged so it needs to be changed anyway.

How to remove battery without setting off factory alarm?

I'm going to help a friend change his starter today. His car is stranded in a parking lot. I'm not used to working on cars with alarms. He said last time he removed his battery to replace it, the alarm started to sound. To replace is starter (which I'm very familiar with), I'll have to remove the battery from the vehicle. How do I keep the alarm from sounding?

The car is a 1998 Toyota Camry. How to remove battery without setting off factory alarm?Find the fuse and remove it. Or screw off the lead where the alarm get it's power from. It's usually at the battery terminal. How to remove battery without setting off factory alarm?Unless the alarm has a back up battery how would the alarm sound if the battery is not hooked up?If need be pull the fuse to the security system.

  • What could be wrong with my car and how to fix? car cranks but will not start.?

2000 Mazda miata mx-5, after the car run for about 30 min sometimes it will just die and it cranks but will not start, and other times when I turn it off to pump gas or to do something quick it dose the same crank but won't start. only when I let it sit for about 20 to a hour will it turn on again, I have change the battery becouse it was like 5 years old but that didn't help. What could be wrong with my car and how to fix? car cranks but will not start.?it probably has to do with the fuel pump. What could be wrong with my car and how to fix? car cranks but will not start.?maybe the fuel pump or fuel filter. When you first turn the key to %26quot;run%26quot; (not start) can you hear a little click from the fuel pump when it turns on?What could be wrong with my car and how to fix? car cranks but will not start.?Check the carburetor float. Sounds like it sinks. That means a leak in the float. If the float does not float, it will not let the car start because it stops the flow of fuel. If you are mechanical, buy a rebuild kit for that carburetor and rebuild it. Make sure to follow instructions carefully and accurately.

The other option would be the fuel pump, or the fuel filter. Check to see if fuel comes into the carb when you press the accelerator. After the car stops, open the carb (remove breather/filter) and press pedal. If no fuel comes thru then either fuel pump is not pumping fuel or the the filter is not letting the fuel come thru.

By the way, if it cranks - it is not the battery. But having to crank so much will drain the battery.

Good Luck. What could be wrong with my car and how to fix? car cranks but will not start.?it could be a lot of things, like the fuel pump/filter, crankshaft sensor, no spark. my suggestion is take it to a mazda dealer. they probably have seen this problem before. as a side note completely ignore the guy that said to check your carburetor he doesn't know what he is talking about, the last car that was produced with a carb was back in 95 or 96. your car does not have a carb. What could be wrong with my car and how to fix? car cranks but will not start.?If your check engine light has not come on then it is most likely a fuel problem. Because it is ten years old (about the age for a fuel pump problem), it is very likely where the problem is at. One nice thing about Miata's is that they were designed for easy service, and the fuel pump is easy to do.

So here is what I would suggest:

Go to a parts store, buy a fuel pump (with sock, slang for the in-tank filter), get a repair manual, OBD II reader, a set of sockets, pliers, and a fuel filter. Go home, replace the fuel filter, fuel pump and read out the error codes if there are any.

All of this will more then likely cost less the the labor charge that you will get for diagnostics at the Mazda dealer and help you to be prepared the next time something goes wrong.

How to fix my a car remote?

I own a 2004 Chevy Malibu. My Remote is not locking/unlocking. Basically is not working at all, i changed the battery and its still not working. there was once when it worked for a day and when i locked and try to remote start my car the alarm went off. lol. and as of now, nothing is going on..can anyone help?please help its so stressful to use your key for everything..Thanks..How to fix my a car remote?Try the following:

Open up the car remote. You may need a mini screwdriver set.

You should see a circuit board in there. Now look for the part on the circuit board that makes contact with the buttons on the remote when you press them. Taking a small flat blade screwdriver, slightly scrape/clean away and dirt/muck that may be on this contact. Do the same for the underside of the button that makes contact with the board. Close back ur remote and try away :)

How do i make my car faster and more efficient?

i've got a 1998 hyundai elantra and i wanna get my money's worth out of my car. what do i need to change in order to make my car faster, and more efficient? right now, everything in my car is the same as the day it left the factory, aside from a few changed spark plugs and other basic repairs from normal wear and tear. any advice is greatly appreciated. i also need to know how to keep my 12%26quot; subs from draining the battery of my car. thanks much! How do i make my car faster and more efficient?well you could get a tune up, that could help, a free flowing exhaust system, and a cold air intake. all of those things will increase your power and efficiency. however that is about it to make it more powerful and more efficient. if you are more concerned with power you can put a turbocharger on it and as long as you keep your RPM's down, and are gentile on the gas that shouldn't affect your mpg's too much.

as for your battery, you might need a new battery if your sub-woofers are draining your battery down, and you might also need a new alternator, one that will be able to produce more electricity. also you might want to leave your car running when you are using a high output sound systemHow do i make my car faster and more efficient?Usually performance mods mean worse mileage. Cold air intakes do not add enough horsepower that you could feel the difference other than a better sound. A free flowing exhaust system would help the sound and performance a little, but you would still not notice a big performance jump. But both of those things would make it more efficient.

By upgrading to better spark plugs, spark plug wires, new fuel filter, keep the oil changed, keep your tires inflated properly, having good wheel alignment, keep the fluids changed (coolant, transmission, etc), and make sure your suspension is not damaged/worn, all those things can help give you the most out of your gas mileage. Another thing that could help is to take out the subs because they weigh alot. Any extra weight you keep in the car just adds more weight for your engine to pull, hence taking away power.

You can add a in line %26quot;Cap%26quot; or capacitor. It stores power while the amp is on and distributes it when your car gets low on voltage. This helps stop your lights dimming or you battery going low.

Good luck! How do i make my car faster and more efficient?I agree with what everyone said besides the nitrous oxide answer....hurrmmm not street legal and def not suited for this engine. Also expensive and pointless in a hyundai.

As for the draining of the battery your alternator should be able to run all the electrics on your car and charge the battery at the same time sooo either you have a problem with the alternator or the alternator is not large enough to power the subs.

I am assuming you are running the stereo with the car running otherwise you will be seeing the battery go flat more often.

I have a 12 inch sub in my 3.0L skyline and have not had problems with my alternator as a result. It's not a hardcore system - newer cars have loads more electrics than what you have with the subs combined so yeh it may be worthwhile getting the alternator checked out.How do i make my car faster and more efficient?K%26amp;N Air Filter - Or similar

Free Flowing Exhaust System - Or just a better muffler

    Synthetic Oils

These are the cheap and simple first steps you can take.

Of course there is the other steps of making sure the tires are at the recommended pressures and keep the foot off the pedal so much.

If you turn off the subs then the battery is not supposed to drain. I put one of those yellow tops in my car and I can let my 12s pound for almost an hour before the battery gets too drained to start the car.How do i make my car faster and more efficient?many people will say cold air intake, exhaust system or something. But that will cost you an arm and a leg, you can buy a programmers or chips to tweak timing fuel ratio or gears. A cheap one will cost you about 300 bucks, or a used one on craigslist is cheaper. you cant get horse power with out sacrificing gas milage but with this you can go back an fourth. also get a better alternater for your batteryHow do i make my car faster and more efficient? The bad thing with making the car faster is that your going to pay more at the gas pump. How do i make my car faster and more efficient?nitris oxideHow do i make my car faster and more efficient?cold air intake will help a little

  • Car battery dies overnight.?

I have a 1999 Chevy Lumina. One night I left the back door slightly opened and needed a boost the next morning. After that my car would always die overnight and I needed to get a boost every morning. Before all of this the car ran well. I had a problem with having to keep getting oil changes. Then I was told the transmission needed work. So I got that fixed. And no longer needed an oil change every month. But that was a months before I started having this problem. Any ways, could i need a new battery? I was also told something about needing a new altenator. If so what type of battery or altenator and how much do they cost? I know nothing of cars except they are made to be driven. I wanna just be able to get in my old car and go like I used to. Please help.Car battery dies overnight.?What happened is when you left the door open and it drained the battery, it left the battery low on charge. A 15 minute ride to work and back will not charge it enough to out last the draw from your computer chip and radio set up.

You need to go to the Auto Parts store and let them put the battery on a charger for a couple of hours to get it fully charged and then don't leave your door ajar.Car battery dies overnight.?Why did you need an oil change every month? Oil usually lasts 3 months or 3000 miles before changes. Sounds like someone is taking your money. Go to an auto parts store like autozone or advanced auto and they will test your battery and alternator for free.

A new battery will run about $75 to $100 for a good one. I buy used ones at the junkyard for $20.

My car won't started and I'm stranded in the TUCSON desert!?

I recently changed my battery after my car wouldn't start. It has been running fine but I did notice that the digital mileage numbers were flickering a bit when I was driving it. Anyways, the car will not start again. It is also not accepting a jump. When I try to turn it on I hear nothing, no clicking, no engine, nothing. Sometimes the lights will flicker a little bit and the speedometer will go out of control. The windows and automatic locks will not work, i forgot to check the radio but I don't think it works either. I am hoping that it is a problem with the battery such as the wires not being properly connected but I really have no idea. I have been looking into getting a new fuel pump as one was recommended recently but I don't see how a fuel pump could prevent the windows from working. Any suggestions as to what it may be would be greatly appreciated. Thank you!My car won't started and I'm stranded in the TUCSON desert!?Sounds like a bad ground, check the battery terminals first and inspect the ground wire.My car won't started and I'm stranded in the TUCSON desert!?If you alternator was not working to keep the battery charged while you were driving, the engine and accessories completely drained the battery.

Even with jumper cables hooked up, the lights and such won't work for several minutes until the dead battery gets %26quot;some%26quot; voltage back into it.

If you're near the car and can put jumper cables back on it, do so for 10 minutes while the good car idles.

Whenever I fill up my car, the gas gauge will say it is half full?

I had my battery changed last week. My gas gauge would tell me that my tank was 3/4's full after I filled up. Now it's telling me it's half full after a fill up. Is this an electrical problem or is there a sensor off? If so, how much are we looking at to get it fixed?Whenever I fill up my car, the gas gauge will say it is half full?Sensor in the tank, it consists of a float (which floats to the top of whatever level of gas you have in the tank) which then rubs against a series of resistances which send a signal to your dash of how much gas is in the tank. If might just be that the contacts on the sensor need to be cleaned, if needed to be replaced it should'nt cost too much. They range from $25 to $200. Cost of labor would be pretty high, as dropping the gas tank is a painWhenever I fill up my car, the gas gauge will say it is half full?Well in order for you to understand how the gauge works I have to explain a couple of things. The fuel pump inside the gas tank does a couple of things. Number one, it pumps fuel to the engine so that it can run. Two, there is what's called a sending unit on the pump. This sending unit is what tells you how much fuel is left in the tank. Have you ever taken a lid off the top of a toilet? It's basically the same idea. You have a floating mechanism inside the tank, and this thing is connected to a piece of metal that moves back and forth on the pump itself. If you know anything about electricity, this changes the resistance, which therefore gives you a reading on your gas gauge.

Take out the fuel pump and test the resistance. Your multimeter should read 2.4 ohms +or- when full, and around .4 ohms when empty. If you aren't getting any numbers like this, then you need a new sending unit on your fuel pump. Personally, when the gas gauge starts to quit working, its time for a new fuel pump because it's usually not that long after the pump quits working. Fuel pumps are usually good for 120k or 90k miles.

Anyone know how to unlock a factory car stereo?

I have a 1998 VW jetta with a factory tape deck and i went to change the battery after it died. When I got back in and tried to put on my awesome tape deck it would work and it said %26quot;SAFE%26quot; on the display. If the previous owner doesn't know, it's most likely the default code which is usuually something like 0000, but don't take chances if it seems like it will lock you out further. :-)Anyone know how to unlock a factory car stereo?there is a code you have to enter, you might find it in your glove box among your owners manual stuff, or you could call the dealer where you bought the car from...

My car is driven about 5 miles per week, how often should I get an oil change?

I have a 1999 Dodge Durango. In the last 4 months, I have driven less than 200 miles. It seems silly to get an oil change every 3 months, but I will if its necessary. I start drive it about 3 times a week just to keep the battery charged ect, but I never drive more than 5 miles at a time. Please let me know how often the oil should be changed.

ThanksMy car is driven about 5 miles per week, how often should I get an oil change?Every 3000 miles, I am in the same situation .. I barely use my car. But every 3000 does the trick for me. Along with an occassional oil change =)My car is driven about 5 miles per week, how often should I get an oil change?I would change it every six months. My car is driven about 5 miles per week, how often should I get an oil change?I would say 6 months as well. Make sure you do the filter as well. Might be able to get a year out of it with synthetic, just because it doesn't build up condensation as badly. My car is driven about 5 miles per week, how often should I get an oil change?Five miles at a time isn't enough to charge the battery, or properly warm up the engine and transmission to burn off acids and contaminants in the oil and coolant and to get the lubricants flowing where they need to flow. A car needs to be run up to full operating temperature for at least 30 minutes at least once or twice per month. Otherwise, internal parts will suffer from lack of lubricant, and seals will start drying out, and the car will just go to pot.

Entering a pin code into my Philips Car Stereo System?

I have a Philips Stereo System in my car (not sure what model exactly) and I have recently had the battery changed and it is now asking me to input the pin number. I have the number but I am not exactly sure how to enter it as to of the numbers are above 6 and the buttons I have on the system are 1 to 6. You can try (ive done it before) to do this...

If the code is 1435, for example, press #1 BUTTON once, #2 four times, #3 three times and #6 five times. get my drift? Dont try it more than twice because it may disable you from trying after that.Entering a pin code into my Philips Car Stereo System?let say the code is 5812

I have a saab 900 ems 1989 car, i changed alternator but it still not charge, what else could be wrong?

i have 1989 saab ems, when the charge light is on,the car sudden stoped,RACV people said it was alternator fault,,later i changed alternator,it was second hand one from volvesaab parts, when i put replacement ,i start the car,the charge light is still on,i checked battery, it i was not charged, can anyone who is expert on the saab tell me what else could be wrong? i checked alternator drive belt,i think it is correctly tensioned.

so if the replacement of alternator is also deflective, how can i check whether is alternator problem or voltage regulator problem, because i have three month warrant .so i have to make sure it is alternator problemI have a saab 900 ems 1989 car, i changed alternator but it still not charge, what else could be wrong?Look at the alternator for a wiring connection marked field,or f1.Check it with a test light or volt meter to be sure it is energized when the ignition is turned on.If it isn't,there may be a fault with the circuit and it may be fused. If it checks out,the next suspect is the regulator which should be checked for poor connections or replaced. You can find out if the charging system is working by briefly disconnecting the battery with the engine running. If it continues to run,the system is OK,if it dies, the charge system is dead.I have a saab 900 ems 1989 car, i changed alternator but it still not charge, what else could be wrong?well to check your alternator the first thing you can do is get yourself a mutimeter ( they are around 10 bucks from a electronic store) then while the car is running switch the mutimeter gauge to Volts then connect the positive(red) lead to the positive on the alternator (there should be a + sign) and the

black lead on the mulitimeter to the body of the alterantor to get a good ground.

if the meter reads over 13.1 volts then the alternator is good if not then the magnets inside the alternator may be worn down or the alternator coil may be broken.

its sounds to me as though you may have a charging system problem, if the battery is good then there could be an open in the charge system somewhere, auto electrics are best for finding faults like this since they have all the equipment at hand...goodluckI have a saab 900 ems 1989 car, i changed alternator but it still not charge, what else could be wrong? On some designs the voltage regulator is built into the alternator, and on others it is a separate module, often mounted somewhere on the inside fender well. A bad voltage regulator could cause your problem, as could a dead short.

How badly will this damage my motor? And if I were to replace it? Chevelle Malibu 350?

This was my father's car. I recently took it off his hands and my buddy and I first went to start it and it wouldn't start. So we changed the battery, starter, cables and some wires. Then tried, it turned over but still didn't start. Then we replaced all the plugs, changed oil, coolant, new HEI distributor, alternator and a lil' minor stuff. It finally started. Awesome.

But, when I first got it, I changed the oil (sitting for a couple years), and it looks like good oil (meaning no water was added in). Then after we got it started and let it idle for a couple minutes, here came our problem. I was losing coolant and it has chocolate milk meaning that coolant got into the oil. I believe it's a head gasket that cracked. Probably both since it has been sitting over time. The car WAS NOT driven, so having it leak since we worked on the car, will it damage if we clean it out and change them? Car starts, but leaking. If we replaced the gaskets and cleaned the coolant, should it be all set??How badly will this damage my motor? And if I were to replace it? Chevelle Malibu 350?Coolant may have been leaking into the crankcase and just sinking to the bottom of the oil pan before you started the engine. The oil won't turn to chocolate milk until it is mixes with the coolant-as in stirred. Get the contaminated oil out of the crankcase right away since glycol reacts with the tin and zinc in bearings even if the engine is not running. You might try pulling each spark plug and if you find one that is different color than the others or wet that can indicate which head gasket is leaking.

After you pull the heads and have checked head and intake manifold gaskets, have the heads checked to make sure they aren't warped and maybe magnifluxed for cracks if there are not any obvious signs of your leak. Sometimes a block crack is not so easy to find but also is not very common. If you repair the leak, and drain and flush the crankcase, your engine should be fine. How badly will this damage my motor? And if I were to replace it? Chevelle Malibu 350?a bad head gasket could be the problem but an oil cooler or the transmission cooling in the raditer could be bad, try remoive the raditor and take it down and have it pressure tested, if it leaks then you have tranny fluid leaking into the radiator, if it's oil then most possibly if it runs smooth you have a leaking intake manifold gasket whech means replacing the intake gasket not the head gasket. How badly will this damage my motor? And if I were to replace it? Chevelle Malibu 350?Car sitting for a LONG time. NOT good. Probably a head gasket OR a cracked cylinder head. Not good.

Now HERE is a piece of PROFESSIONAL and knowlegable advice. IF it is your intention to KEEP the car i would recommend STRAIGHT away to replace the motor with a fresh remanufactured engine. Not a REBUILT, NOT a Junk yard swap, NOT re-ringed engine, but a COMPLETELY remanufactured engine.

If your lucky it is either a head gasket or cracked cylinder head. BUT, if your luck runs as I seem to see it running, you may also have a cracked cylinder liner or block.

If so NO AMOUNT of repairs will help you. For this reason I reccomend a reman engine. You can get them complete (LONG BLOCK) for 800-1000 bucks. Money well spent.

Remember, you heard it here FIRST. Don't let me become an %26quot;I TOLD you so%26quot;How badly will this damage my motor? And if I were to replace it? Chevelle Malibu 350?1 yes replace all the gasket's

2 if oil is going into the coolant it could a oil seal or a lifter problem

3 you will have too flush the system out to get rid of all the oil

4 if there oil in the coolant there could coolant in the oil

I buy my batteries at Wal Mart and have no problems. If you have a problem they replace it with no arguement. Big name batteries just cost more. They are not really any better.

2004 Toyota Corolla Transmission Oil, Reverse Noise and Battery?

I have an '04 Corolla. For some reason when I put the car in reverse it makes a clunking kind of noise. I don't know if this is related to a lubrication problem or whether is something related to the transmission failing. I have never had any problems with my transmission. Also, when my car was ~1 1/2 yrs %26quot;old%26quot; I had to change my transmission oil, it was really dark and it was supposed to be pink. Should I change it/flush it again? The car has ~25-30,000 miles then. Now it's almost at 56K. Also I need to change my battery (I've had it since I bought the car) but I don't know how to buy one. What are the specifics for my car as far as battery type/amps, etc? Thanks a lot!!!2004 Toyota Corolla Transmission Oil, Reverse Noise and Battery? The driveline warranty on a Toyota is 5 years, 60K miles. Take it to the dealer right away, and they should fix it for free. And, yes, the same CCA battery will be fine for your car.

Hope this helps. God Bless!2004 Toyota Corolla Transmission Oil, Reverse Noise and Battery? You should run it to the parts store and let them change your battery, I would change the fluid again on the tranny. Also have it change for anythign worn like bushings2004 Toyota Corolla Transmission Oil, Reverse Noise and Battery?the more cold cranking amps the better, but for such a small car, just match what you have now, it will be fine....

a %26quot;clunk%26quot; usually eludes to a cv joint problem, or possibly loose lug nuts.....but it could be a trans issue....2004 Toyota Corolla Transmission Oil, Reverse Noise and Battery?have the entire drive line checked. you shouldn't change the trans fluid until you hit the recommended mileage in your owners manual for maint. it the fluid is getting burnt and dark there is usually an internal problem--take it to your dealer asap and diagnose. good luck2004 Toyota Corolla Transmission Oil, Reverse Noise and Battery?the clunking noise is probably a broken motor mount

it wouldn't hurt to service the transmission

why do you think you need a battery? most batteries last 5,6, even 7 years these days if it isn't cranking slowly or lights fade very quickly when engine is off you probably don't need to waste your money

    good luck

Battery and mazda 323 (2003 model)?

I changed the battery in my car today bEcause the old battery died. The car works now but when I lock n unlock my car using my alarm remote control the indicator lights no longer flash when it use to. Does anyone know why n how I can fix it? Thanks!Battery and mazda 323 (2003 model)?when you replaced the battery it reset all the settings to default. your clock is probably off and all of your radio presets are erased also. the key less locks also went back to default. and they can be changed. usually from a beep, to a beep and lights flash, to just lights flash. it will entail holding down a button for a certain amount of time, then pressing scrolling thru the options with a button. i dont know what the button combination is on your car but i am sure there is a section on it in your owners manual (probably under key less locks or door locks) if you still cant figure it out i would take it to a mazda dealer and tell them you want them changed (shouldn't cost anything)

Is it illegal to work on your car at the roadside?

Someone told me it was illegal but I see the AA %26amp; RAC doing it all the time. Also does the law differ for working at the roadside in residential areas? Im sure the law does cover something like not being able to do an oil change outside your house and contaminating the road surface but would like to know how the wording of this law distinguishes between say a roadside battery change and a roadside oil change

ThanksIs it illegal to work on your car at the roadside?I think that emergency repairing is different from regular maintenance. Is it illegal to work on your car at the roadside?emergency repairs are usually but not always OK; it always depends on WHERE YOU ARE-some countries, states, cities, absolutely forbid it, others don't care unless you set up shop, some have fits if you spill a drop of oil, some don't have any idea what harm petroleum products cause-and so on, ad infinitum, ad nauseum..... you MUST check local statues. Some community standards allow no repairs, no washing, no anything, and NO nonrunning vehicles! If you are a safe distance off the highway, you can change a tyre, a light, or a fanbelt. (pretty much everywhere). I've pulled a piston on the side of the road...but I don't recommend it.

    Alternator or Battery issue?

Hello All, I tried starting my car last week and it wouldn't start. Car battery was 3 years old and i saw green deposits on the top. I tried jump starting the car (connected to the other car for more than 5 to 6 minutes) and still it wouldn't start. Whenever I started my car, the battery red indicator on the dashboard came on . The indicator was blinking yellow before jump starting, but then the yellow blinking went away after charging for 5 to 6 minutes (during jump start).

Changed the battery and cleaned the cables and it ran fine for 2 days. Today, it wouldn't start again.

    1. Please let me know if the problem is with the battery or alternator or any other part?

    2. How much does it cost to change the alternator (or if there is any other broken part)?

    3. In this hard economic time, I wouldn't be able to spend a lot of money. Sp please let me know the cheapest place where I could take it to fix it or could I do this myself?

    Appreciate your answers!!

Car is 95 Honda accord - 4cylinder.Alternator or Battery issue?if it ran fine for 2 days and then wouldnt start again its a good possibility its the alt. take it to autozone or oriellys and they will check the alt for you free of charge and tell you if its bad or not. they can check it while on the car too.Alternator or Battery issue?well when the battery gets low on power, your alternator is forced to work extra hard. so i would recommend replacing both. i would go to the junkyard and pull an alternator and install it on your car or go on craigslist and search for one. there are tons of honda parts on there for cheap. you could also look on there for a battery. but you'll probably have to go to an auto shop for that.Alternator or Battery issue?I'd guess it's your battery that's shot, not your alternator. The easiest way to tell would be to get a multimeter and measure the output of the battery vs alternator. If while running the car gives an output of around 14 volts, the alternator is fine.

A battery (depending on quality an brand) will run anywhere from 60-150 bucks depending on what you get.

If you go to Autozone or any other major parts store or garage chain they will usually be more than happy to test your battery and alternator for you for free if you don't have a multimeter.

Another option is to start the car, and while it's running remove the negative battery cable terminal from the battery. If the car continues to run, your alternator is fine.

bottom line, i fyour car ran for several days on a charge, you're alternator is most likely fine. It's much more likely that the battery is just no good or your electrical system may have a slow drain on it that you need to repair.Alternator or Battery issue? If your alternator is bad, you would see some problems after running it for a while, the alternator recharges your battery as well as run your electrical system while the motor is running...so if your alternator was bad, your motor would run until your ignition system used all the energy left in the battery.

You should be able to change out the alternator yourself, shouldn't cost more that $100 for a new one. Also: make sure all of your grounds are in good conditionAlternator or Battery issue?Remove the battery, give it a full charge, have it tested by somewhere you trust.

If you need a battery, you'll know it right there.

This is a good place to start. If you want, and can ? remove

the alternator and have that tested.

Because of the cold weather approaching, I would imagine it is

your battery, but there are many, many variables here. It could

    be a combination of components.

So eliminate the possibilites what you can first.

    Good Luck to You...

Try to work with one place on this issue rather than run here and there for the best battery price.

ie. A Local Trusted Autozone ? or Auto Parts Store.

Make sure you have the battery charged, then tested.Alternator or Battery issue?A voltmeter and some basic charging system knowledge can help to diagnose your problem. I'm not going to spell it out for you. You can help yourself through this hard economic time by doing some homework.Alternator or Battery issue? What happens when you try and start the car?

Appreciate your answers!!Alternator or Battery?Clean up the terminals on the battery cables. Have the battery charged and checked at your mechanics shop. Put the battery back in the car, start it up, then connect a voltage meter to the battery. It should show from 11 to 12 volts before you start it. After you start the car,the voltage meter should show almost 14volts. If it doesn't move after you started it, the alternator needs checking. With the care shut off, the voltage meter should not show any loss of voltage. If it does, you need a new battery.Alternator or Battery?first thing is clean battery cables

jump start it an ddrive to any parts store or shop ask them to check charging system then you know for sure not reason to replace anything til you know for sure that wil save you money check belt clean cables jump start it then have it check smarter cheaper way than guessing buying what you dont need cost youAlternator or Battery?if the light is on whin the car is runing its the alterator but if the battery is over 3 years old i would change it tooAlternator or Battery?Hi: Step 1) take the battery out and have it tested at pep boys or some other car parts place. Most of them will test it for free.

If it fails replace the battery.

if the battery passes the test then it is the alternator.

    New battery about 100 bucks

new alternator, not much more, depending on the year, make and model of car.

Very easy to replace either one your self.

russAlternator or Battery?Disconnect the battery cables and clean them thoroughly. Reconnect them and jump start again if necessary. Drive the car for 20-30 min and see if it will re-start. If it still fails to start then buy a new battery. Always go with the cheapest fixes first.Alternator or Battery?replace the battery and clean the battery terminals then tell me year, make and model and engine sizeAlternator or Battery?that green stuff you see on the battery posts? get it off, that,s corrode and the alternator can,t keep your battery charged with that stuff on it. take the terminals off, clean them good and make sure they are tight. by the way after you get them clean put a little bit of grease on them, it will help keep the acid away.Alternator or Battery? It's definitely your battery. If it doesn't start after jumping then it's gone. Get one at Walmart or Pep Boys or some large store. Use a small 1/2%26quot; socket wrench or open end wrench to undo the cable clamps and just drop the new battery in.

Alternators are pretty expensive, from $200-800.Alternator or Battery?1. if the battery had corrosion on the terminals, clean the terminals. the most likely cause is the battery.

2 replace the battery always first if it is a dead cell it will cause the alternator to struggle to charge a battery that is completely dead.

    3. use a voltage meter and postive lead to the battery pos and neg to the battery neg , if you see 14 volts while the car is running the alternator is charging.

4 alternaotrs are not that hard to change but you may need a hoist.

    5. your best bet for economic reasons is to change it yourself and go from there.

How do i solve a central locking problem?

    I own a Ford Fiesta 1998 S reg. The problem is that the central locking doesn't seem to work properly. I have changed the battery in the car and in the key and also re-programmed the key the thing is;

When sitting inside the car the central locking works fine. All doors lock and un-lock after a few presses of the button. However, when outside the car nothing works at all. When i lock and unlock the car maually, again all locks work fine!

Any help would be greatly appeciated.

    Thanks!

How do i solve a central locking problem? It sounds like there is not enough strength in the signal when operating from outside the car.

You could check that the new batteries are in fact good. You could also try checking again but via an open window to see where the signal will operate from in terms of distance.

    Good luck. h

  • Can someone please describe how to dismantle a car battery and charge it with black and decker recharger pls?

I have a toyota corolla 2000 vvti gs and has done 57000 mileage, can someone also recommend whom shall i get my first service with i.e. private garage or from toyota. I bought this second hand car just a month ago and i have not even used it but due to sudden change in temperature few weeks back the battery doesn't work at all, nor does the central locking or radio. Pls guide me to get this car working properly without having any issues. this is my first car in the UK and its a shame the battery has gone flat. a brief guide of how to dismantle the battery from the car and charge it would be great and also some basic tips to maintain a car. Also pls suggest me if i should go with Toyota dealer for servicing or private. thanks a lotCan someone please describe how to dismantle a car battery and charge it with black and decker recharger pls?you really dont want to dismantle the battery, there isnt really a whole lot of good that will come of it, especially if you are trying to figure out how to do it on here. the battery probably just needs to be re-charged, but if it only sat for a month, you might have an electrical issue with the car causing a constant battery drain. it shouldnt do that, unless of course you left the light on or something like that. a battery here in the states would probably set you back any where from 50 to 100 dollars, and install would be free. try to find an auto parts store and ask if they can charge and test, most around here do it for free anyway.

as far as service, you might be better off going to the dealership and have them service it for you, make sure everything is right and then you could start doing maitnence yourself. chiltons, or haynes makes good manuels for vehicles, i would suggest buying one befor you do any work yourself. save you a lot of time and money. good luckCan someone please describe how to dismantle a car battery and charge it with black and decker recharger pls?You can charge the battery it in the car. Hook your charger red clamp to positive side of the battery red terminal and black clamp to negative side of battery which is black terminal that has black cable attached to it. You dont have to take battery out

How do I reset my security system on my 1999 Ford Explorer?

We recently changed the battery on the car. After doing this, the alarm system works, but we cannot start our car unless we push the unlock button on the alarm system right before we start it up. If we do not start it up in under 1 minute, we have to push it again! I think it just needs to be reset. It gets to be a hassle! Thanks in advance! How do I reset my security system on my 1999 Ford Explorer? You need to reprogram your computer to allow it to know that you are just starting your car. How do I change the batteries in my Mercedes key?

How do I change the batteries in my key for my 1998 Mercedes c280? How do you know when it's time to replace them? My car is acting strange, the doors are locking on their own, I just got locked out!!How do I change the batteries in my Mercedes key?if it's the laser cut key i'm thinking of, i'm pretty sure you just slide the key itself out of the remote by pressing the black button over on the back of the key, then slide the little compartment looking thing where you took the key out of, and there should be the casing that holds the 2 batteries in. hope it helps! if theres some way you could just show me what the key looks like if i'm wrong, i might be able to help you further. How do I change the batteries in my Mercedes key?You change the batteries when you cannot open the doors remotely until you are very close to the car.

How to change the battery depends on which style of electronic key you have. Assuming you have the original key from '98, first pull out the metal key from the side. When that is out, at the base of the key (the wider key) on the side that the physical key sits in, you will see a light coloured plastic tab within the key groove. Using the metal key, press that tap in and while holding it in, use your finger nail to separate the base/wide end from the rest of the key. The battery holder will pop out. You will need two CR2025 calculator batteries. They are pretty common and sold at most places that sell batteries.

Why doesn't the key work in the doors?

You can open bonnets from the outside. Its a matter of climbing under and reaching up to pull the mechanism.to release the bonnet.

Worst case you will have to jack the car up and see if you can reach the battery to try to put the jump leads on.If the battery isnt to low.

I think i accidentaly left my car battery charging with...?

the instructions I beleive said positive clamp goes to positive terminal on the car battery, and negative clamp goes to engine block or metal chasis, but I think I left it with the negative clamp on the negative terminal

(because htats how i had originally connected it in order to jump start it, and forgot to change it).

When I left no warnings or anything came up on the battery charger. Its a VECTOR 12v battery jumpstarter and charger.I think i accidentaly left my car battery charging with...?There is no problem. Usually when charging a battery you put positive to positive and negative to negative. When you jump start an engine, it's best to put negative to the engine block or metal frame part on the bad vehicle to avoid any possible sparking. But you did it the correct and normal way.I think i accidentaly left my car battery charging with...?OK....What's the question?I think i accidentaly left my car battery charging with...?For future reference, when you jumpstart your car, clamp the negative cable on the chassis as well. Your battery might be fine. Hook it up to the car and see if it works. If it's not leaking and your car starts you should be fine.I think i accidentaly left my car battery charging with...?no problem...neg battery terminal connected to block or metal chassisI think i accidentaly left my car battery charging with...?Should be ok. Negative terminal is connected to metal chasis.I think i accidentaly left my car battery charging with...?Honestly it doesnt matter, thats how I've done it for years. I think the thing they are trying to prevent with connecting the ground to the engine block etc. is the chance of an explosion from a spark igniting gasses off the battery. There are probably other reasons but as long as you hooked the positive to the positive and the negative to the negative your fine.I think i accidentaly left my car battery charging with...?No problem, just recheck the connections and make sure to wear safety glasses around exposive batteries.I think i accidentaly left my car battery charging with...?your fineI think i accidentaly left my car battery charging with...?You did fine, not to worry, all things are good right now.But if your having a problem with starting your car you ought to look into getting your battery checked and your altenator checked, Auto zone or Advance will do this for free.I think i accidentaly left my car battery charging with...?its really not going to hurt it none, its just better if you use a ground point somewhere on the engine or chassis, you probably didn't hurt it this time, basically you just shot a direct charge to it,that's about it,if you was charging it and it in the car it wont hurt it,but its best to disconnect the negative cable from the battery if your going to charge it in the vehicle, good luck with it.I think i accidentaly left my car battery charging with...?It doesn't matter if you connect the negative clamp to the engine block or the battery post. I use the battery post myself. There won't be any problem.

Lights and speedometer go crazy after battery change?

Not sure how much of this might be related.

Several months ago, I noticed that my headlights would occasionally flicker at highway speeds. Since it was just a minor annoyance, I ignored it.

My (original, 9-yr-old, 90K mile!) battery died about a month ago and I replaced it. All was fine (except for the same flickering headlights) until yesterday, when my console battery light started flickering...constantly. I planned to take my car to AutoZone to get the computer checked, but before I could get there, I'm driving 45 mph when the speedometer drops to 0, my low fuel and airbag console lights come on, my headlights and interior lights go almost completely out, and the car starts lurching. (Scary!)

I just barely managed to get it home, where it's now parked. Before I buy a new alternator, does it sound like I just need to replace the alternator, or might it be something else?

(The car is a 1999 Ford Escort SE.)Lights and speedometer go crazy after battery change? It's the alternator. The diode pack fried. When one of the diodes went, it gave you the flickering lights. How do i get my car hood up?

Hey i need help i bought a car a few months ago and now i have to change the battery it has been snowing and i think the hood is frozen bit it has been warm out lately and i tried to blow-dry it and pour hot water over it and it hasn't budged and when i go and pull the thing that you pull to get the hood open its tight can anyone help me please!!How do i get my car hood up?Driving your car around the block a few times should warm everything under your hood. Better than blow drying or pouring how water. If that doesn't work, then you need to get a mechanic to open you hood so you don't break anything.

    Things to try.

    1) Have someone push down hard on the hood where it latches while you pull the release lever. Try a vice grip on the lever to pull it a bit.

Try not to make it so tight it breaks the handle though.

    2) Try accessing the hood latch from underneath by reaching up behind the bumper. Long arms and a big screwdriver (and a few cuss words) may help.

Weak hood hinges or worn gas assist lifts will cause a similar condition.

If this is the case, then have someone pull the lever while you pry the hood open with a screwdriver at the latch.

  • After changing starter, my car acts as if there is no battery.?

Two days ago the car had trouble starting.. I'd turn the key and there would just be a clicking noise. After a few turns the car would start and be perfectly normal. Then, today, it wouldn't start at all... Same clicking noise but wouldn't start at all. So, I bought a new starter, installed it exactly how the old one was installed. I don't know if this matters but I initially forgot to unhook the battery before I installed the new starter and I did get a bit of a shock.. but I quickly got up and unhooked it then finished the job.

When I got back in, thinking everything would be fine... I turn the key and nothing! No lights, no noises... As if there was no battery hooked up at all. The battery is a brand new red-top, there's no way that it's dead. I took it down off the jack-stands and tried to start it again and it started with two tries. I let it sit for a few minutes then shut it off and tried to start it again and now.... it's back to no power at all.

2003 Blazer has 130 miles 4x4, after changing the battery the car won't start but all gauges and light are working, I took it to a dealer they just want too much money, what I know the car system needs to be reset, I researched on line and they said put the key in the ignition and turn it on for 5 minutes then turn it off and leave it for 5 minutes I did that so many times but won't work, so I rand a wire from the starter to the ignition and the car now starts but even if I put the gear on D R 1 2 or 3 the car will still starts, now the Q is here I wanna know where is that dives located the one makes the car NOT starting on D or R? or do u know how to reset the system so I don't have to deal with all this? any idea might help u never know!! PLEASE DON'T TELL ME TAKE IT TO A MECHANIC OR DEALER is BETTER!! CUZ I KNOW THAT IS BETTER BUT I DON'T HAVE MONEY TO FIX IT. THANK YOUMy car starts even on 1 2 3 D and R do u know about cars?.....seriously??? ....

but anyway to answer ur question use google to look up the security system reset procedure for ur exact model.......on most GMs those years it is 20 minute reset .....which means trun key to run then off then using a stopwatch wait exactly 20 min and turn key back to run position then off then it should start..... which is a pain to get exactly right sometime and also why dealer charges more for these vehicles as compared to older models that were 5 min or key in door resets......

as for ur other question the neutral safety switch is located on the transmission......and u won't b able to wire ur ignition up with out some other stuff to work with a jump wire since ur by-passing whole system......

** also usually when security system is activated even if u jump it like u have the alternator won't charge so ur running on battery only so u are going to have battery issues really quick in most cases....its all part of the anti-theft system.......My car starts even on 1 2 3 D and R do u know about cars? This isn't clear...%26quot;after changing the battery the car won't start but all gauges and light are working, I took it to a dealer%26quot;.
